How to Stop Pigeons Perching on Fascia Boards and Soffits (Without Damaging uPVC)
Stop pigeons perching on uPVC fascias, soffits and bargeboards by cleaning the surface, fitting low-profile spikes with adhesive pads, and sealing gaps safely.
To stop pigeons perching on fascia boards and soffits, clean off the droppings, then fit low-profile deterrent spikes along every edge they land on. On uPVC, fix them with waterproof adhesive pads or UV-resistant cable ties around the gutter brackets, so you don't drill into the boards. Then close any gaps at the eaves, but only once you've checked nothing is nesting there.
Where exactly are the pigeons landing on my roof edge?
Watch for ten minutes from the ground before you buy anything. Pigeons tend to use a few specific spots at the roof edge:
- The top edge of the fascia board, usually where it meets the back of the gutter.
- The gutter rim, which gives them a lip to grip.
- Bargeboards at the gable end, especially the sloping top edge.
- Soffit overhangs and corner junctions, where the eaves form a sheltered shelf.
- Dormer cheeks and porch fascias, which are lower and easier to reach.
Droppings are the giveaway. A line of streaks down the wall below a fascia shows you the exact spot. If the staining is only under the gutter, start with our guide to stopping birds landing on gutters and come back here for the board and soffit edges.
What should I do before fitting anything?
Check for nests first. Birds nesting in use are protected under UK wildlife law. Never fit spikes, mesh or anything else that disturbs an active nest. If you see nesting material, birds carrying food in, or chicks calling from the eaves, leave it alone until the young have fledged and the nest is empty. Swifts and house martins, which nest under eaves, are declining species and are not the target here. Don't deter them.
Then clean the surface. Droppings carry bacteria, and they stop adhesive bonding.
- Wear gloves and a dust mask. Don't dry-brush droppings, as that throws dust into the air.
- Wet the droppings with warm soapy water and scrape or wipe them off.
- Wash the fixing area with a cloth and a household cleaner suitable for uPVC, then rinse.
- Let it dry completely. Adhesive won't hold on a damp or dusty surface.
Work from a stable ladder with someone footing it, or use a platform tower. If the roof edge is above first-floor height, a professional with proper access equipment is the safer choice.
How do I fix spikes to uPVC without drilling?
You have two no-drill options. Both are covered in more detail in our no-drilling fixing guide.
Waterproof adhesive pads. These suit flat, clean uPVC such as the top of a fascia or a porch board. Press the pad firmly onto the back of the strip, peel the backing, then press the strip onto the dry surface and hold it. Apply them in dry, mild weather rather than in the cold or damp, because cold surfaces weaken the bond. ThornGuard sells waterproof adhesive pads separately from the spikes for exactly this kind of surface.
UV-resistant cable ties. Where the strip sits on the gutter rim, you can tie it round the gutter bracket instead of sticking it. This works well on narrow edges where there isn't much flat surface for a pad. Every ThornGuard pack includes cable ties.
Screws are the third option. uPVC fascia can be drilled, but each hole is permanent and lets in water if it's poorly placed. On a rented property or a recently fitted fascia, adhesive is the better choice. Save screws for timber bargeboards or a brick parapet.
Which spike layout works on a narrow fascia or bargeboard?
Roof-edge surfaces are narrow, so you don't need a wide band of spikes. You need the strip to cover the whole width of the perch, with no flat gap a pigeon can stand in.
- Narrow fascia top or gutter rim: split the strip lengthways to make a thinner run. This also roughly triples the length it covers. Our cutting guide shows how to cut across the sections and split along the length.
- Bargeboard with a sloped top edge: fold the strip along its length so it sits on the ridge of the board and wraps over the edge. ThornGuard strips bend four ways, so one strip can cover the top and both sides.
- Corners and joins: don't leave gaps. A pigeon will use a 10cm gap as a perch. Overlap the ends or cut across a section to turn the corner.
The irregular heights (12mm, 22mm and 36mm) matter more than you'd think. A single-height row gives a bird a flat line of tips to balance on. Staggered heights break that up, so there's no stable footing.
What about the gaps in the soffit and eaves?
Spikes stop birds landing, but they won't stop a bird squeezing into an open gap. If pigeons or starlings are getting in under the soffit or behind the fascia:
- Confirm the gap is empty and no birds are nesting. Watch for several days to see if birds are going in and out.
- Close it outside the nesting season (broadly late summer to winter) with a proper eaves vent or mesh that keeps airflow.
- Never seal a gap with a bird, eggs or chicks inside.
If you're unsure what's in there, a pest controller or ecologist can check before you block anything. Don't guess.
How many spikes do I need for a roof edge?
Measure only the edges where birds actually land, not the whole perimeter of the house. A typical pigeon-hit run is one gable bargeboard, a front fascia over a door or window, or a few metres of gutter edge. The 4m pack (10 strips) covers up to 12m once split lengthways, and the 8m pack (20 strips) covers up to 24m. For a whole-house run, add up your problem edges, then compare. The fitting guide walks through measuring up, and the ThornGuard spikes page has both pack sizes.
No deterrent is guaranteed on every bird, and a very determined pigeon may move to the next unprotected edge. Treat the whole cluster of favoured perches in one go, so it has nowhere easy to move to.
Common questions
Do adhesive bird spikes work on uPVC?
Yes, as long as the uPVC is clean, dry and flat where the pad sits. Use waterproof adhesive pads made for outdoor use, fit them in mild dry weather, and press firmly. On curved or very narrow edges, tie the strip to the gutter bracket with cable ties instead.
Will bird spikes damage my fascia boards?
Not if you use adhesive pads or cable ties, as neither leaves holes. Screws do leave permanent holes, so on uPVC it's better to avoid them. If you later remove the strip, any leftover adhesive can usually be cleaned off with warm soapy water or a plastic scraper.
How do I stop pigeons going under the soffit?
Fit spikes to the landing edges so they don't settle there, and close open gaps with vented mesh only once you're sure no birds are nesting inside. If a nest is active, wait until the young have fledged before blocking anything.
