When does a no-drill fix actually make sense?
Drilling is faster and more permanent on solid timber or raw masonry. But there are plenty of situations where it's the wrong tool:

- Render and pebbledash — screw fixings crack the surface and pull out easily anyway

Method 1: Waterproof adhesive pads

Step-by-step for adhesive pad fixing:
- Clean the surface thoroughly — wipe with isopropyl alcohol or a dry cloth to remove dust, grease and chalk. This single step makes the biggest difference to how long the bond lasts.
- Let the surface dry completely. Even on a dry day, give it 10–15 minutes after wiping.
- Cut your spike strip to the right length first, before applying the pad. Trying to trim after the pad is on is awkward.
- Peel the backing from one side of the adhesive pad and press it firmly onto the underside of the spike base. Hold for 30 seconds.
- Peel the remaining backing, position the strip on the surface, and press firmly along the full length. Apply sustained pressure for 60 seconds rather than a quick press.

Method 2: Cable ties (the underrated workaround)

Best surfaces for cable tie fixing:
- Round or square metal railings and balustrades
- Plastic guttering (thread through the gap in the spike base)

How to do it:
- Thread the cable tie through the pre-formed slot in the spike base strip.
- Loop it around the rail or pipe and pull tight with pliers — hand-tight isn't enough outdoors.
- Trim the excess tail flush with side cutters so there's no sharp nub left.
- Use at least two ties per strip (one near each end). On longer runs or surfaces subject to animal weight, add a third in the middle.

- Silicone stays flexible and may let the strip shift under animal weight
